Metaverses gained a lot of attention after Facebook changed its name to Meta in October 2021, creating great anticipation in the tech world regarding the new feature.
The word metaverse comes from the fusion of the word "meta," which means transcendent, which exceeds the physical nature of things (ELIAS FILHO, 2022). And the term "verse" comes from the word "universe," and can be considered as the universe that transcends the physical barriers of the real world, translating exactly what the metaverse is (ELIAS FILHO, 2022).

Like this, the metaverse is the fusion of virtual reality together with augmented reality, creating an immersion for the individual who enters this universe. With massive investment from companies like Meta and Microsoft, the scenario has completely changed, and it is expected that there will be sufficient technological advances to make virtual reality devices cheaper, reaching ever larger audiences, and with significant improvements in graphics, increasing the degree of realism (MALAR, 2021)

The first use of the term metaverse appeared in Neal Stephenson's 1992 novel "Snow Cash," which anticipated the creation of virtual universes and games that allowed users to do whatever they wanted in those worlds. This work was a major precursor to games like World of Warcraft, Second Life, The Sims, Grand Theft Auto (GTA), and many others.
The most common metaverses are AltSpaceVR (Microsoft), Horizon Workrooms (Meta), Decentraland, and The Sandbox. Decentraland is an immersive and engaging 3D virtual world that was launched in 2017, being the pioneer and oldest space in the metaverse (SCHIMIDT, BANUSCH, 2022). The Sandbox began in 2011 as a simple virtual world based on blockchain, migrating to a 3D gaming platform in the metaverse in 2017, allowing users to build, play and exercise ownership, monetizing all virtual experiences (SCHIMIDT, BANUSCH, 2022).

This technology should be aimed at companies, which will have money to finance development projects, and will use them for meetings, training, events and remote work (MALAR, 2021).
