The implementation of facial recognition in Brazilian stadiums represents a revolution in security and fan experience. Starting in 2025, as mandated by the General Sports Law, this technology will be mandatory for access to football matches. Several clubs in the Brasileirão Série A are already adopting or testing this innovation, with Bahia being one of the latest to consult with Palmeiras about implementing the system at Arena Fonte Nova.
This trend was pioneered by Palmeiras, which installed facial recognition at Allianz Parque in early 2023. Other clubs such as Flamengo, Sport, Vasco, and Atlético-MG have also followed suit. Flamengo is implementing the technology at Maracanã, while Sport and Vasco are conducting tests at Ilha do Retiro and São Januário, respectively.
In addition to increasing security at sporting events, the system has contributed to the arrest of criminals, including drug traffickers and those convicted of various crimes, and to combating ticket scalping and counterfeiting. For example, the technology helped the São Paulo Public Security Department arrest 28 criminals at games.
The system works by requiring fans to register in advance, providing personal information and a photo of their face. Upon arrival at the stadium, the system verifies access authorization and quickly grants entry. The Goiás stadium implemented this technology over a year ago, preventing more than 500 people from attempting to access the stadium illegally.
In parallel, the Chamber of Deputies is working on a bill that establishes guidelines for the use of facial recognition in stadiums and sports arenas, with the aim of ensuring the protection of personal data in accordance with the LGPD and guaranteeing security at sporting events.
Bahia's search for information about the system's implementation at Allianz Parque signals a growing movement among Brazilian clubs to adopt this technology, focusing not only on security but also on modernizing their infrastructure. Arena Fonte Nova, in Salvador, is about to enter this new era of sporting event management, promising a safer and more efficient experience for fans.
