Yes, it is possible to change your name. The Public Registry Law (Law No. 6,015/1973) in its Article 56 determines that the interested party, within the first year after reaching the age of majority (18 to 19 years old), may change their name, as long as it does not harm their surname. Individuals over 19 who wish to change their name must file a lawsuit requesting authorization from a judge for the change, demonstrating the exceptional nature and justification of the case.
For this name change to occur after the age of 19, at least one of the following prerequisites must be met:
✅ Sex change (Provision 73/2018 CNJ);
✅ Correction of spelling error of name (art. 110 of Law No. 6,015/73);
✅ Marriage and Divorce (Art. 1,565 of the Civil Code);
✅ Protection of witnesses and victims of crimes (Art. 57, §7º and Art. 58 of Law No. 6,015/73);
✅ Homonym. Change due to another person with the same first and last name (Art. 57 of Law No. 6,015/73);
✅ Inclusion of well-known artistic names (Art. 58 of Law 6,015/73);
✅ The name must cause embarrassment to the person or be associated with something embarrassing (Art. 58 of Law 6,015/73);
✅ Changing a foreign name to a compatible Brazilian name. For example: Elizabeth (foreign name) in Portuguese is Isabel (Art. 115 of Law No. 6,815/80);
